Glossary
Any fruits that have been hydrated. The most popular dried fruits are currants, figs, dates, apples, cranberries, and peaches.
Figs are soft, sweet fruits with many small seeds and can be eaten fresh or dried.
Dates are fruits from palm trees and are rich in fiber, antioxidants and have a natural sweetness in flavor.
Currants are sweet, dried fruits and come from black Corinth grapes. Are rich in sugars and micronutrients. The Vostizza Currants are a high quality P.D.O. labelled product.
Stored product insects mainly consist of beetles or moths and can infest stored food.
One of the most common grain beetle is the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis. Belongs to the Family of Silvanidae and can be found on cereals, chocolate, tobacco, oats, rice, walnuts and dried fruits.
The dried fruit beetle, Carpophilus hemipterus is a common pest of fruits and grains. Belongs to the Family of Nitidulidae and can attack a variety of products such as figs, dates and apples.
The use of extreme temperatures to manage post-harvest pest control in durable commodities is based on the fact that insects are poikilothermal organisms and, therefore, very sensitive to extreme temperatures. Extreme temperatures are in the range of -15oC and +50oC.
Heat treatment is a non-chemical method to disinfest stored product commodities. Is based on the application of high temperatures for short exposures.
Cold treatment is an alternative to chemical control of stored product insects. According to the literature temperatures below -18 would control key stored product insect species including beetles.
Is an electronic device that can detect different parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, the concentration of a gas etc.
These are protocols for heat/cold treatments to determine the specific time and temperature for the complete control of stored product insects.
